How to Transfer Fastag from One Car to Another

For avoiding the long lines at the toll plazas across the National Highways of India, the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) and the Government of India invented a quick solution for the toll payment. This is known as Fastag and after making it compulsory for all vehicles after 15 Feb 2021, it became a widespread method of paying the toll tax electronically. All four-wheeler vehicles which have not installed the Fastag yet must have to buy it immediately as no payment at the toll plazas will be made without Fastag.

Fastag is a small device that comes in the form of an adhesive sticker that is pasted on the windscreen of a four-wheeled vehicle from inside. This Fastag uses RFID technology which stands for Radio Frequency Identification technology.

With the help of this RFID technology whenever a vehicle crosses a toll plaza, then the sensors at that toll plazas acknowledge that vehicle through its RFID technology records the movement of that vehicle and automatically deducts the toll fees from the pre-paid account of your Fastag.

The use of Fastag on a four-wheeler vehicle not only avoids the wait in queues but also avoids the problem of cash money and there is no need to generate the paper slip as the toll payment. This digital system of Fastag enables the automatic debit of toll fees from your Fastag wallet.

As any technology has Pros and cons with it, similarly there are some disadvantages or drawbacks associated with Fastag. For example sometimes if happens that you have purchased a Fastag for your old vehicle, but after sometimes you buy a new vehicle, then the question arises what to do in such a situation for a Fastag.

What to do for the Fastag when someone sells the old vehicle

When anyone sells his old vehicle, then he may not be aware of what to do with the Fastag installed on the old vehicle. Here we will give complete guidelines to our readers regarding this problem.

In a case when a Fastag user has sold his old vehicle, then he must immediately contact the Fastag issuing agency (Bank or mobile apps) and request them to close or deactivate the old Fastag account. For this, the users can call the customer care number of that particular service provider or can call the Toll Free number i.e 1033 of the NHAI.

By contacting the customer service team of the Fastag issuing bank, they will consider your request for closing the Fastag and it will be deactivated quickly.

So here we are explaining in detail what to do if you already have a Fastag for one vehicle but then purchase a new vehicle.

How to transfer Fastag from one Car to Another

If you have purchased a new vehicle and already using a Fastag on your old vehicle, then you must want to know can I use the old Fastag for your new vehicle. The answer to this question is no. It means that as per the guidelines by the NHAI, a Fastag purchased from one vehicle can only be used for that vehicle.

Any attempt to use a Fastag issued for one vehicle or car, to another car can cause it to become Blacklist. So when you try to use a Fastag made for one car on another car, then it will be blacklisted and you will not be able to make the toll payments at the toll plazas.

The reason behind this is that, whenever you apply a Fastag, you have to give complete information about the vehicle for which you apply it including the vehicle number, Vehicle Registration Certificate, Chassis number, etc.

When you use this Fastag on another car, then while crossing a toll plaza, the scanners try to scan that Fastag, and since it is registered for another vehicle, the scanner not able to scan it, which leads that Fastag to become blacklisted.

How to get a Fastag for New Car

As mentioned above the Government of India has issued strict guidelines that a Fastag is only for a particular vehicle and once it is attached to the windscreen of a vehicle for which it is applied, it can’t be used or transferred to another vehicle or car. When we try to install that Fastag on some other vehicle, then the sensors at the toll plazas detect that the details of Fastag registered with a vehicle is different and it disables that Fastag and not allows the toll payment through it.

In this situation, the vehicle owner must have to close his/her old Fastag account by contacting the service provider as mentioned above and then apply for a new Fastag by following the whole process again i.e by visiting the official Fastag portal of that bank or mobile payment service.

Conclusion

In the final, we can conclude that a Fastag issued for one car can only be used for that car. Because a Fastag is issued only after submitting the necessary documents like RC Copy of a vehicle, entering vehicle number and KYC documents for that vehicle, so trying to use it on another vehicle leads to mismatch information when scanners at any toll plaza come in contact with that Fastag and the Fastag becomes blacklist.

Therefore we can summarize that you can’t transfer a Fastag from one car to another. You must get a new Fastag for every new car.

    • Hello Poonam

Yes it is possible to deactivate the Fastag for the car sold and retain the Fastag for the other car that you have with. For more details you can contact the customer support of the bank from where you have purchased your Fastag.

      Thanks

  1. Hello team,

I have sold my vehicle without using the fastag. I have now purchased a new vehicle with a new fastag. Now, there is an unused balance on my old vehicle fastag. The old fastag (for the sold vehicle) and the new fast (for the new vehicle) and both the fastags are registered on 2 different banking portals
Please advice how can I transfer balance amount from my old vehicle fastag onto the new vehicle fastag. Is there a way? If I can do it online? or is there any registered email address do I need to send to for the change??
